Pistachios for Metabolic Health

Indians often include almonds and cashews in their diet. Today, let's talk about another favorite nut of mine: pistachios. Like always, our discussion is backed by evidence.

This study, titled "The effect of pistachio supplementation on metabolic syndrome and its components in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials," examines how eating pistachios affects our health markers.

What was the study about?
This study analysed 17 randomised controlled trials effects of eating pistachios on markers of metabolic health:

Key Findings:

Regular consumption of pistachio showed:

  • Reduced systolic blood pressure by 2.89 mmHg

  • Lowered triglycerides by 18.76 mg/dL

  • Decreased fasting blood glucose by 3.62 mg/dL

  • Increased HDL (good cholesterol) by 1.43 mg/dL

  • However, pistachios did not affect BMI, waist circumference, or diastolic blood pressure.

What this means for you?

1. Replace oily fatty evening snacks with 30 grams of pistachios to start experiencing these benefits.

2. Consistent consumption is essential for at least 3 months to observe noticeable changes.

3. Avoid salted or deep-fried versions as they counteract the benefits.

Note: While including pistachios offers significant benefits, it should not be the sole intervention for these conditions. Tailoring your diet to address specific conditions is crucial.

If you're unsure where to begin, click here to chat with us on WhatsApp for personalized guidance.

It's important to note that pistachios are also high FODMAP foods. If you have IBS, IBD, or any gut issues, I recommend reaching out to my team of nutritionists first on WhatsApp.

Tip of the week

As we get started with the Skin Challenge on our Whatsapp Community. Here is something for you to get a flavour of it:

Day 1: Adding cooked tomatoes into your daily regime.
Beta Carotene, lutein and lycopene in tomatoes have been shown to protect your skin against damage from the sun. They may also help slow down or reduce wrinkling.

Pro Tip: Consider pairing carotenoid-rich foods like tomatoes with a source of fat. Such as oil (ideally olive oil), cheese, nuts, ghee etc.

Try my favourite Bengali style Tomato Sweet & Sour Chutney. I guarantee you will love it and so will your skin!!!
