Don’t just sit pretty

What went down?
283 older adults (69 years on average, with a BMI of 35) joined a 6-month experiment to stand more and sit less. The standing group got all the goodies—fitness monitors, health coaching, standing desks, and custom goals to reduce sitting time by 2 hours daily.

They fell short of that mark (by about 90 minutes), but here's the kicker: their systolic blood pressure dropped by 3.5 mmHg. Take a seat (briefly) to let that sink in.

Why does it matter?
Standing 30 minutes longer a day = less pressure on the heart, literally. Compared to staples like exercise (3–4 mmHg drop) or popular diets (2–5 mmHg drop), standing holds its own. And it’s free!

Plus, reducing sedentary time seems to smooth out blood flow and avoid pooling in your legs, unlike marathon couch sessions.
